They DO Exist!

One of the things I loved about design school was the freedom instructors gave to be as creative as possible without worrying about budgets or needing a client's approval. I do feel I was a bit duped though. I graduated expecting to get the go ahead on all my ideas, no matter how complicated or unnecessary they were in the grand scheme of things.

Not so much.

What I learned instead, was that paper is expensive. And printing, binding, di-cuts, belly bands (if you deigned), and tip-ons—are even more so. Details—those pretty little, smart little, awesome little add-ons that make everything better—get tossed. And you are often left with a very pared down, barely recognizable version of that initial fabulous idea that drove you to design in the first place.

That said, I couldn't have been more elated to get this birthday card in the mail from Anthropologie. This beautiful little hand assembled piece not only serves to wish me the happiest birthday ever, but it's a coupon for 15% off AND that sweet little candle thingy....a necklace. Now that's smart.

So kudos to you Anthropologie and all you grand companies out there that get it right. Thank you for taking the time and effort (and money) to do your job with excellence. I will be seeing you soon!

Hoochie Mama

I was thrilled to be asked by The Nature Conservancy to work on this year's Hoochie invitation package. For Atlantans in the know, this event (formerly know as The Hoochie on the Coochie) is one of the largest and most fun all year. And it's an awesome event to be designing for! We finally have the logo finalized. The one they ended up going with is the last one. Thought you might enjoy seeing the process!

It's A Wrap!

To/From Wrapping Paper by Design Army

So, can we just talk a bit more about the upcoming holidays? It's hard not to think about the packaging potential this holiday season, especially when I spied these gorgeous papers from Felt & Wire Shop.

Type-O

House Industries is hosting an exhibition of prints, products, installations and sculptures based on their alphabetical forms. These limited edition serigraphs (25 of each) will be on sale there. Oh, how I love that "M." Click here for more info.

And speaking of House, if you were able to acquire one of these nativity scenes influenced by Alexander Girard before they sold out, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. These are just spectacular.

Tag-You're It!

There is really no way to contain the excitement I feel over the first signs of cooler days ahead. I can't help but think of what this all means — football season, fires, piles of leaves, crisp blue skies unclouded by the sticky humidity of the south. My mouth is starting to water over the visions of turkey, sweet potatoes and butternut squash soup. And all these wonderful things conjure up an even greater anticipation—Christmas is just around the corner.

I'm getting in the mood for some Christmas lights, cookies, and of course—gifts. Or really just the wrapping of the gifts. So to get you in the mood for some Christmas packages, here are some pretty fantastic gift tags and enclosure cards. Enjoy!

Inspire Me

Just thought I would post my daily image of inspiration in hopes that it might inspire you to be more green, use more green, host a tea, or in my case—re-register for wedding china!

Birthday on the Books

We celebrated my little boy's first birthday this past week. It was full of the usual—cake all over the face, a new balloon obsession, torn and half-eaten wrapping paper, and the eventual meltdown. It was awesome.

I must say that of all the gifts received, there was one that stood out. My sweet sister-in-law is one of those people that listens to little cues during the year in order to purchase the perfect gift. She and my brother gifted my toddler with This is New York by Czech born Illustrator & Writer, Miroslav Sasek. I have admired M. Sasek's This Is series for years. His whimsical illustration style is absolutely captivating and his words are quite hilarious. What a great opportunity to teach your kids about the world out there, or at least what is was like in the 50's and 60's (which only adds the humor). I'm looking forward to adding to the collection!

Welcome to Wonderland

I found these wall decals over a year ago when I was planning my son's nursery. I never pursued this route, but looking at them again I wish I had. Perhaps once we have a play room you will find these beautiful images and lovely typography gracing its walls. They are spectacular. Not just decoration, they define your space. You can purchase your own at Harmonie Interieure Enjoy!

Lovely Letterpress

I fell in love with letterpress when I printed my wedding invitations on a friend's press a few years ago. Now I can't get enough of it. I've been stalking two letterpress shops on Etsy. Images above are by Sycamore Press. Note the fantastic detail, particularly the subtle thread sewn into the paper. More sweet treats below by Sweetbeets.

Creative Space

I make no attempt to hide my love for Martha. While I don't check her site daily, I certainly check it regularly for recipes, crafts, and entertaining ideas. I came upon Martha's very own craft room a few days ago, and it is of course, perfect. If it were mine, I think I might live there.

Something Lost

One of my greatest regrets in life, thus far, is not spending enough time with my grandmother while she was living. I was so young when she was healthy enough to make the trips from Australia to the States, and I think all I saw were our differences, especially in age. As I grew up, she grew less healthy in body and mind. The only way to get any good grandma face-time was to make the horrendous 20-hour trip down under. By then, I was busy with life and didn't have two weeks to travel to see her. That was my excuse at least.

Now that I'm through those tough years of trying to figure out who I am and who I want to become, I think about Grandma. I love to hear stories about her because the more I hear, the more I realize how similar we are. We both love to bake, appreciate good craft, and have that spirit which drives us to create.

I also think about her quirks. Using "me" in place of "my" (I just need to get me lipstick), her crazy laugh, her amazing gift for replicating the sound of the kookaburra, and her hankies. She always had a thin little hankie tucked in her sleeve under her wrist. Always.

When I see hankies for sale now, I always think of Grandma. And these take the cake. Typography and hankies!? A little bit of new mixed with old memories...what could be better? To get your own, visit The Curiosity Shoppe.
